Serious tram accident in Dresden-Pieschen: Six injured!

A serious accident between two trams caused severely disrupted traffic in Dresden-Pieschen on Tuesday evening. At around 5:23 p.m. the trains collided on Leipziger Straße, near the Altpieschen stop and the popular Ballhaus Watzke. The affected trams belong to line 9 and are of the “NGT DX DD” type. A special incident that once again puts safety in local public transport to the test.

How Day24 reported that a switch was incorrectly set in the direction of Bürgerstrasse, which could have been the cause of the collision. However, the exact circumstances are still being determined. Six people were slightly injured in the collision, including the train drivers, two children aged around two and twelve, and two women. They complained of pain in their limbs and were immediately taken to various hospitals by ambulance.

Difficult rescue work

Both trams derailed during the incident and had to be laboriously put back on the track. The train, which was traveling towards Radebeul, could not be withdrawn as originally planned. Instead, hydraulic jacks and a shifting bridge were used so that the tram, which weighed over 35 tons, could be lifted back onto the track. This challenging operation took longer than expected and was completed around 9:20 p.m.

Leipziger Straße was completely closed for the rescue work. The fire brigade and tram aid specialists from Albertstadt and Striesen were on site with a total of 22 specialists to care for the injured and bring the situation under control. The Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe (DVB) informed about diversions for lines 4, 9 and 13 in the affected area, while road users were asked to avoid the area and observe the barriers.

Another example of road traffic accidents

But this incident is not the only one in Dresden. A collision occurred between two trams on line 4 at Dreyßigplatz in the Mickten district on Monday afternoon. In this accident, a train also jumped off the track, but there were no injuries. The fire department and DVB consultants were quickly on the scene to rescue the train, which weighed over 35 tons, using hydraulic lifting devices. The train was successfully put back on track within two hours, meaning operations could be resumed quickly MDR reported.

Overall, these incidents shed light on the challenges of road transport and the need to continually review both safety and infrastructure. The hope remains that such accidents can be reduced in the future through improved measures and technologies.
