New police station in Dresden-South: Modern, sustainable and soon ready for use!

Something is happening in Prohlis: The Dresden-Süd police station can look forward to a new home! A modern building is being built on Niedersedlitzer Straße that will not only offer the approximately 160 employees an adequate working environment, but will also focus on sustainability. So far, the cops have been spread across three locations in Prohlis, Leuben and Plauen, which doesn't make everyday work any easier. But that will soon be a thing of the past, because the Free State of Saxony has launched an interdisciplinary implementation competition to plan the new precinct, as Sächsische reports.

A total of 15 working groups were invited to submit their ideas, and out of 13 submitted designs, the concept from Riehle Koeth GmbH + Co. KG from Reutlingen was chosen, which won first prize. The jury praised the functional arrangement and the clarity of the building complex. The outside area is also impressive: it impresses with its functionality and a low degree of sealing.

Sustainability and innovative planning

The focus in this project was particularly on resource-saving architecture. The plan is to build in a low-tech construction method and use regional wood, recycled concrete and recycled aluminum. The goal is not just a stylish new building, but also to achieve BNB silver certification – a sign of environmentally conscious building.

The Saxon Real Estate and Construction Management (SIB) organizes this competition, which aims at sustainability and modern construction. In order to meet the competition conditions, comprehensive knowledge in the areas of architecture, technical building equipment, building physics and landscape architecture is required. The planned building will have an area of around 1,859 m² and is intended to take into account the smallest concerns about sustainability.

Future outlook

Negotiations with the first-placed consortium are already underway and planning is scheduled to begin in August. The new precinct is planned to be completed by 2030. The new building will not only function as the headquarters for the criminal investigation service, the management and the command service, but will also be available for the Saxon Security Guard, the community police.

Another exciting aspect is the introduction of Building Information Modeling (BIM), which helps to identify planning errors at an early stage and ensure faster implementation of construction projects. The pilot project is seen as an important step towards the future, as the website Bau-Rockstars notes.

Immediately after the end of the competition, the results will be presented publicly. From July 1st to 25th, 2025, interested citizens can view the designs in the Saxon State Ministry of Finance, with the exhibition being open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can register via a list of names - so you should secure a place here in good time!
