Young people with knives threaten their peers: police catch robbery trio!

A shocking incident occurred in Dresden-Prohlis on Monday afternoon, June 2, 2025, in which a 13-year-old and a 16-year-old were threatened by three young people. The perpetrators, all aged 14 and 15, presented themselves as potential robbers and demanded money. Although the two young men successfully escaped with their lives, the perpetrators did not stop before spraying the victims with irritant gas, which made the situation even more dramatic. As [tag24] reports, the suspected perpetrators are Ukrainian teenagers.

The police reacted immediately and set up a special commission called Iuventus, which is now conducting the investigation into aggravated robbery. Through detailed investigations, those responsible were quickly identified. There are suspicions particularly regarding adolescents, who are increasingly appearing in reporting on juvenile crime in Germany. Last year, the number of cases rose to around 13,800, which is more than twice as high as in 2016. This worrying growth raises many questions.

Focus on juvenile crime

The increasing youth violence in Germany is not just limited to the acts in Dresden. The statistical broadcasts show that young people between 14 and 17 and adolescents between 18 and 20 are also affected. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, the increase could be caused by psychological stress such as that caused by the Corona measures. The pressure seems to be particularly on young people seeking protection, as [Statista] shows.

The phenomenon of juvenile crime is also predominantly male. Almost three quarters of the young suspects are boys. This raises questions not only about the causes, but also about the effectiveness of the current measures and sanctions in the juvenile justice system. The discussion about criminal responsibility and the need for preventive approaches is lively as the focus is increasingly on preventing criminal careers.

Further incidents in Dresden

The incidents in Dresden are not limited to the robbery in Prohlis. Police also reported that a suspected drug dealer was arrested in Seevorstadt on June 3rd. The 23-year-old Ghanaian had drugs worth a mid-three-figure amount with him. There was also a break-in at a pharmacy in which the perpetrators removed the door locks, and 60 cartons of cigarettes were stolen in Zschertnitz, which resulted in significant damage of around 6,000 euros. Such acts clearly show the multitude of criminal activities that are currently occupying the city, as [Saxony Police] reports.

It remains to be seen how the judiciary will respond to the increasing youth crime and what measures will be taken in the future to prevent incidents like those in Prohlis and to restore security in the city.
