Dresden is dancing! Canaletto city festival expects 500,000 guests!

From August 15th to 17th, 2025, Dresden will once again be transformed into a pulsating festival landscape when the “Canaletto” city festival with the motto “Dresden dances” brings the old town and parts of the new town to life. There is great anticipation as more than 500,000 guests are expected to attend this celebration of the city's history and culture. The festival area extends across central squares such as the Altmarkt, the Zwinger, the Neumarkt and the main street, where a variety of activities await visitors.

Over 1,000 artists show off their skills on a total of eleven stages. This promises a varied program that has something for every taste. However, the city administration also warns of possible difficulties: extensive closures and traffic disruptions in the city center are expected, especially due to the large crowds. It is therefore advisable to check the travel options and possible detours in advance.

Rules and safety precautions

As in previous years, this time too, some things are prohibited on the festival grounds in order to ensure the safety of all participants. Glass bottles, weapons or weapon-like objects are taboo, as is carrying large bags or pieces of luggage. Bicycles and electric scooters are also not allowed to be brought into the festival grounds. To stay up to date, those interested can follow the current developments in the live ticker.

Beyond the city festival, Dresden has all kinds of facets to discover. Right next to the old town is the Loschwitz Bridge, a technical masterpiece that is not only known as the “Blue Wonder”, but also represents an important connection between the residential areas of Loschwitz and Blasewitz. This impressive steel truss bridge, which has existed since 1893, not only has a total length of 280 meters and a width of 12 meters, but is also the oldest structure in the city that remained undamaged during the war. Its weight is 3,500 tons and the height of the supports is around 24 meters.

Its striking blue color and unique design have made it a symbol of the city, alongside other iconic sights such as the Frauenkirche and the Golden Rider. Despite some critical voices about its appearance, the Loschwitz Bridge has not lost its popularity and attracts visitors every day who want to admire its beauty.

The “Canaletto” city festival and the impressive sights such as the Loschwitz Bridge continue to make Dresden a popular destination for locals and tourists. In the coming days there will be a big festival with music, dance and culture that will make the city shine in a colorful light. It remains exciting to see how the people of Dresden and their guests organize the festival and what surprises they can expect.
