More trains from Dresden: direct connections to Hamburg, Prague and Vienna!
Since today, August 12, 2025, travelers from Dresden can look forward to an expanded train offering. Czech Railways (ČD) has announced that it will significantly expand its connections and create new direct connections to Hamburg, Prague, Vienna and Copenhagen. This is great news for anyone who wants to travel comfortably and quickly.
The new connection to Copenhagen, which will go into operation from May 2024, ensures that travelers will be able to travel directly from Dresden to the Danish capital in the future. A small downer remains: the route between Berlin and Hamburg is currently closed, which is why this connection was only planned. Interestingly, two trains from Prague to Copenhagen will stop in Dresden every day, at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. There will also be a third connection, especially in the summer months, which offers even more flexibility.
Direct connections to Hamburg and Vienna
But that's not all: all long-distance trains from Prague will run to Hamburg in the near future. This will significantly increase the number of direct connections between Dresden and Hamburg. This is where the new ComfortJet comes into play, which reaches speeds of up to 230 km/h. This will significantly shorten the travel time to Hamburg and make good old train travel attractive again.
In addition, from December 2023 there will again be a daily connection from Berlin via Dresden to Vienna and Graz, with an additional late afternoon train to Vienna planned. For travelers to Vienna and Budapest, it should be noted that in the future the trains will only stop in Praha-Holešovice and the main station will no longer be served.
New trains and planning for the future
Another aspect is the planned evening train from Prague to Dresden, which departs at 8:45 p.m. This will give travelers the opportunity to travel comfortably later in the evening. The long-distance trains to Germany will in future be operated under the name Railjet. However, details about Deutsche Bahn's long-distance transport are still subject to change; We are eagerly waiting to see what will be published here in late summer 2025.
If you want to find out more about tickets, you should know that booking early is usually cheaper. Travelers can book European train tickets 3 to 6 months in advance to get the best deals. Prices are often lower, especially during less busy times, so buying in advance pays off. Trainline offers a clear platform for booking and comparing prices.
In summary, it can be said that Czech Railways has done good business with these innovations. The increasing demand for comfortable and faster connections is leading to an encouraging upswing in rail transport, especially for the Dresden region. So there is a lot of reason for travelers to look forward to the coming years!
