Silent Victims: Modern Slavery Event in Mylau!
In the coming week, an important topic will be put on the agenda at Mylau Castle: On June 3rd at 7:30 p.m. an event entitled “Slavery – today?” will take place in the Historical Council Chamber. instead of. This meeting is organized by the Futurum Vogtland association, which deals with the current situation of human trafficking and exploitation. The discussion partner at the event is Annika Riewesell from the Karo-Verein Plauen. It will be exciting because the topic affects us all, whether we want to admit it or not.
The background to this event is the alarming fact that modern slavery is not only a horror scenario of the past, but also still affects millions of people today. According to the Global Slavery Index, around 50 million people worldwide were victims of slavery in 2021, with almost 28 million living in forced labor and around 22 million in forced marriages. What is particularly impressive is that the number of those affected has increased by 10 million since 2016. The reasons for this include climate change, conflicts, migration movements and the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, as the Federal Agency for Civic Education bpb.de turns out.
A look into history
Although humanity has spoken out against slavery at certain times, the reality is often different. While slavery was outlawed in many states until the 19th century, today we are still fighting against its modern forms, which look very different. The dependence on people who are viewed as the property of others is evident in numerous areas - from forced labor to debt bondage. The Transatlantic Slave Trade, which began in the 16th century and lasted until the 19th century, also left a deep mark on history, with millions of people from Africa being captured and enslaved. To this day, Brazil is one of the main destinations for enslaved people.
The causes of modern slavery are complex and multifaceted. Climate change and political conflicts are increasing the number of people who find themselves in such conditions. Undocumented migrants are particularly at risk because they often end up in precarious jobs. Up to 152 million children worldwide are in child labor, often in conditions similar to slavery, and this makes it clear that the issue is far from being abolished.
A call for discussion
The event on June 3rd aims to raise awareness of these problems. “Slavery – today?” is more than just a title, it is a call to confront the injustices that prevail in our time. With this platform, the Futurum Vogtland association not only offers a place for discussion, but also the opportunity to find solutions and ways in which we as a society can become active. The event could make an important contribution to a topic that is often ignored but urgently requires attention.
We cordially invite everyone who is interested to come to the historic council chamber of Mylau Castle on June 3rd at 7:30 p.m. Let's talk together about the challenges that concern us all. There is no better time than now to take a step in the right direction and advocate for the welfare of those in need.
