Diversity of colors and art from 32 countries: The Ostrale Biennale starts!
Today, June 7, 2025, Dresden will become a hotspot for contemporary art as the OSTRALE Biennale opens its doors. In the former Robotron canteen, an architectural example of Eastern modernism, a colorful range of works of art from 32 nations is presented under the motto “Never Grey”. The biennial event attracts artists and art lovers from all over the world and shows that colors play a central role in our nature and life. Andrea Hilger, head of OSTRALE, also emphasizes this.
Over 100 creative minds are exhibiting their works, including the video work “Down Under” by the Finnish artist Marcus Lerviks. This will not only impress with impressive images, but will also focus on the contrast between the calming sounds of nature and the hectic city noise. Another highlight is the large-format still life by artist Leoš Suchan, which depicts waste in a contemporary painting style. Curator Veronika Krülle Kotoucova points out the symbolism of still lifes and links them to the reality of today's throwaway society.
Art and politics combined
The Biennale not only brings up impressive works of art, but also political issues. The Israeli curator Drorit Gur Arie shows works that bring diverse voices from the Middle East to Dresden. The exhibitors' works often contain critical discussions of current social challenges, which enables visitors to deal with explosive topics.
An exciting aspect is the decision to also use the Bautzner Straße memorial as a branch. This underlines the cultural and historical context that the Biennale brings with it.
