The exciting world of eSports is captivating more and more fans, and now this trend is also becoming tangible in Dresden. The eFootball department of SG Dynamo Dresden is starting in the Virtual Bundesliga (VBL) and will thus be part of a new competition format that will raise the curtain on October 16, 2025. The new EA SPORTS FC 26 was released on September 26, 2025, which forms the basis for the new VBL season. The Bundesliga has significantly revised the game mode for this year's season, and it will now be played in 1vs1 mode, instead of the previous 2vs2 format. A total of 35 clubs are competing in a new system, and the DFL is bringing a breath of fresh air to the league with a prize money pool of 87,500 euros, as well [dfl.de].
New formats and exciting matches
The VBL Club Championship starts with monthly “showdowns” that take place from October 2025 to February 2026. Each showdown lasts around ten days and consists of an online preliminary round, followed by offline knockout tournaments. The best 16 teams from the online preliminary round will secure a place in the offline showdowns, which will be held in cities such as Leipzig and Frankfurt. The dynamic of the league is enhanced, among other things, by the possibility for clubs to nominate two players from their current squad as “VBL Power Items”, who can then compete with a total playing strength of 99.
The games are broadcast live on the club's own Twitch channel, which not only provides exciting entertainment, but also promotes direct contact with the audience. Anyone who follows the matches can even have a say in which games are shown in a conference. Interested spectators can see how the professionals from SG Dynamo Dresden will compete against well-known clubs such as FC Bayern Munich or Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

The eFootball team is supported by Ostsächsische Sparkasse Dresden and Vertikalis. This shows that the local economy is strongly behind the club's eSports commitment. But not only in Dresden, but also nationwide, a study by pwc.de the potential for eSports teams in clubs. Almost half of those surveyed have a positive attitude towards such initiatives.
However, this development is not without challenges. Almost half of survey participants said they don't know where to watch esports events, and many have difficulty understanding the structures and rules of the competitions. The aim here is to improve accessibility and spark new enthusiasm for eFootball.
