At around 8:30 p.m., an alert witness noticed that a smoke detector was sounding and thick smoke was coming from an apartment. The police immediately alerted the fire department and asked the residents to leave the building. In the incident, a 50-year-old tenant was taken to hospital with suspected smoke inhalation.
The alerted fire department was on site with 23 emergency services and five vehicles and was able to quickly bring the fire, which originated in the kitchen, under control. Fortunately, the flames did not spread to other rooms, which can often lead to devastating damage in such situations. Nevertheless, the material damage to the affected apartment is estimated at a five-figure amount and the apartment is currently no longer habitable. Due to the operation, Ernst-Thälmann-Straße was completely closed for around an hour.
