Serious cycling accident in Dresden's old town: 28-year-old injured!
On Sunday afternoon, September 1st, 2025, an unfortunate accident occurred between two cyclists in the inner old town of Dresden. At around 2:35 p.m. there was a collision on Hasenberg Street, which had serious consequences for one of those involved.
The details of the incident show that the 28-year-old driver was heading towards Akademiestrasse when he turned left at the corner of Akademiestrasse. He overlooked the oncoming 35-year-old. This carelessness led to the two cyclists colliding, both of whom fell. While the 28-year-old suffered serious injuries, the 35-year-old escaped with minor injuries. The exact circumstances and the amount of material damage are so far unclear, as T-Online reports.
A look at the accident statistics
Cycling accidents are a recurring issue on the roads, and the statistics are not particularly encouraging. According to Tagesschau, a total of 441 cyclists died in traffic in 2024. This represents a slight decrease compared to the previous year, although the number remains alarmingly high in a ten-year comparison.
What is particularly striking is that around 70.7 percent of the 92,882 bicycle accidents that resulted in personal injuries involved collisions with cars. Drivers are largely to blame in more than 75 percent of these cases, underscoring the urgency of paying more attention to one another on the roads. Another alarming detail is that e-bike riders are particularly at risk, as statistics show. In 2024, 43.5 percent of cyclists who had fatal accidents were Pedelec owners, which indicates a dramatic increase compared to ten years earlier.
In the context of the accident in Dresden it is clear that cycling in the city is becoming increasingly popular, but is still associated with risks. Road safety must therefore be sustainably improved in order to better protect young and old users in particular. Sunday's incident is a sad reminder that one should always be careful.
We wish the injured 28-year-old a speedy recovery and hope that such accidents can be avoided in the future.
