Shock in Dresden: Two trams collide – seven injured!

On Tuesday evening, October 14, 2025, there was a serious traffic accident between two trams on line 9 in Dresden-Pieschen. The incident occurred around 5:25 p.m. on Leipziger Straße, near the “Altpieschen” stop. In this head-on collision, both trains derailed, causing significant traffic delays. Leipziger Straße remained completely closed for around six hours. The first emergency services were on the scene immediately, including the professional fire brigade with hydraulic technology to rescue the derailed trams. The rescue lasted until around 9:50 p.m. when both vehicles were finally towed to the Trachenberge depot. The road was reopened around 11 p.m., but tram lines 4, 9 and 13 had to be suspended during the operation. This is all reported by the Saxon.

Seven people were slightly injured in the accident, including the two drivers aged 60 and 59. Two boys, aged 1 and 12, as well as a 21-year-old man and two women aged 37 and 79 were also among the injured. They all complained of pain in their heads, arms and legs and had to be taken to hospital. The total damage is estimated at around 100,000 euros. The cause of the accident is still unclear. The police traffic accident service has taken over the investigation to clarify the exact course of the accident, also reports Blick.de.

The context of traffic safety

Traffic accidents are a widespread problem in Germany. About 2.5 million road traffic accidents were recorded in 2024, a decrease compared to previous years. However, challenges remain high, particularly when it comes to personal injury. Road traffic is still one of the most common causes of accidents. As Statista shows, insufficient distance, inadequate speed and driving under the influence of alcohol often lead to dangerous situations in traffic. Statistics report that there were 2,770 traffic fatalities in the same year and that the number of accidents with personal injuries has remained at a similar level for years, while there has been an increase in property damage in particular. The introduction of “Vision Zero”, which aims to achieve zero traffic fatalities by 2050, makes it clear that there is still a lot to be done to increase safety on the roads.

We wish those injured a speedy recovery and hope that such accidents can be avoided in the future. The city of Dresden is faced with the challenge of further improving traffic safety in order to minimize the risk and increase citizens' trust in local public transport. So stay vigilant – everyone is required to do their part to ensure road safety.
