Tempo 30 in Dresden-Pieschen: Security increases, violations remain the same!

In Dresden-Pieschen, a future-oriented project has been observed since February 21, 2024: Tempo 30 is now applying on Bürgerstraße. This measure has been initiated in order to increase traffic safety in the residential area and has already proven itself. Over 90 percent of the drivers adhere to the speed limit, as current control results show, which come from the speed measurements of a total of 4,212 driven vehicles. 196 violations were registered, but everyone was in the area of the warning money, which means that usually no more than 15 km/h was driven too quickly. This proves that the introduction of the speed limit can be described as successful. In the past, specifically in 2021, a petition for the introduction of the speed limit has already been launched. Pieschen currently reports on the background of this measure.

In May 2023, the idea of the speed limit was finally approved by the district council Pieschen. Since then, SPD city councilor Stefan Engel has been active to further promote compliance with the speed regulations. In an inquiry to the city administration, he requested further speed controls and even checks the establishment of a stationary lightning. These measures are regarded as sensible additions to improve traffic safety and could help to ensure that even more road users observe the speed limit.

for more safety in road traffic

The discussion at Tempo 30 is not only current in Pieschen. There is a debate throughout Germany about the expansion of speed limits in urban areas. The Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport is open to initiatives that can increase both traffic safety and to improve the climate. While the need for a nationwide introduction of speed 30 is still controversial on thoroughfare, the Conference of Transport Ministers sees a clear need for action in special living areas and around sensitive facilities.

The advantages of a speed limit in residential areas cannot be dismissed. The German Environmental Aid emphasizes that speed 30 can significantly reduce noise, air pollution and traffic accidents. Examples from other European cities show the success of this measure: In cities such as Brussels and numerous French communities, the introduction of km / h led to a decline in severe traffic accidents by up to 70%. This clearly shows that a speed limit protects not only the life of drivers, but also that of all other road users.

a question of responsibility

The World Health Organization also supports the introduction of Tempo 30 because it represents a decisive measure to protect human life. In German cities, it is also required to establish speed 30 as a regular speed for closed towns. Experts argue that such regulations not only help to avoid noise, but also significantly reduce CO2 emissions and health risks through air pollution.

The example from Pieschen could have a role model function. The city administration is responsible for ensuring both security and quality of life in the urban rooms. It remains exciting to see how the discussion about Tempo 30 will develop and whether more cities will follow the positive example of Dresden.
