Speed limit 30 in Dresden-Pieschen: Safety increases, violations remain the same!

A pioneering project has been in place in Dresden-Pieschen since February 21, 2024: The speed limit on Bürgerstrasse is now 30. This measure was initiated to increase traffic safety in the residential area and has already proven itself. Over 90 percent of drivers stick to the speed limit, as shown by current control results from the speed measurements of a total of 4,212 vehicles passing through. 196 violations were recorded, but all of them were within the warning fine range, which means that the speed was usually no more than 15 km/h. This shows that the introduction of the speed limit can be described as successful. In the past, specifically in 2021, a petition to introduce the speed limit was launched. Pieschen currently reported about the background to this measure.

In May 2023, the idea of the speed limit was finally approved by the Pieschen district advisory board. Since then, SPD city councilor Stefan Engel has been active in further promoting compliance with the speed regulations. In a request to the city administration, he asked for further speed controls and is even considering setting up a stationary speed camera. These measures are seen as useful additions to improving road safety and could help ensure that even more road users observe the speed limit.

For more safety in road traffic

The discussion about speed limit 30 is not only current in Pieschen. There is a debate across Germany about extending speed limits in urban areas. The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport is open to initiatives that can both increase traffic safety and contribute to improving the climate. While the need for a comprehensive introduction of 30 km/h speed limits on thoroughfares is still controversial, the Conference of Transport Ministers sees a clear need for action in special residential areas and around sensitive facilities.

The advantages of a speed limit in residential areas cannot be denied. German environmental aid emphasizes that a speed limit of 30 km/h in urban areas can significantly reduce noise, air pollution and traffic accidents. Examples from other European cities demonstrate the success of this measure: In cities such as Brussels and numerous French municipalities, the introduction of a 30 km/h speed limit led to a reduction in serious traffic accidents by up to 70%. This clearly shows that a speed limit not only protects the lives of drivers, but also those of all other road users.

A question of responsibility

The World Health Organization also supports the introduction of 30 km/h speed limits as a crucial measure to protect human lives. In German cities there are also calls for 30 km/h to be established as the standard speed limit for built-up areas. Experts argue that such regulations not only help prevent noise, but can also significantly reduce CO2 emissions and health risks from air pollution.

The example from Pieschen could definitely serve as a role model. The city administration is responsible for ensuring both safety and quality of life in urban areas. It will be exciting to see how the discussion about 30 km/h will develop and whether more cities will follow Dresden's positive example.
