Cruel cruelty to animals: Goose mercilessly stoned on the banks of the Elbe!

A cruel act occurred on the Pieschener Elbe bank in Dresden that is heating up people's minds. A young greylag goose was pelted with stones until it died. The brutal attack became known thanks to a caller who informed the wild bird sanctuary about the injured animal. But the operation came too late: a helper took the goose to the rescue station in Kaditz, where unfortunately the signs of its serious injuries could no longer be overlooked. She did not survive the transport.

When the goose was autopsied, the injuries were found to be serious: hematomas on the head, neck and liver, a torn intestine, a bleeding lung and a ruptured air sac were just some of the injuries the goose had suffered. She was estimated to be between two and four months old and had hatched this year. Particularly tragic: The injured goose had swollen bread in its beak, which it had thrown up due to stress - a possible reason why it may have suffocated on it, according to the experts at the wild bird sanctuary.

Not an advertisement, but an indication of important action

Despite the terrible circumstances on site, the wild bird sanctuary decided not to file criminal charges against unknown persons. Animal rights activists have found that such advertisements usually have little effect. The police in Dresden also see it as their duty to draw attention to the incident. A police spokesman appeals to witnesses to report such crimes. Animal cruelty can result in up to three years in prison, but so far the penalties for such offenses in the country have been very low.

The topic of animal protection in general raises questions. According to a report by tagesschau.de The coalition agreement calls for an increase in penalties for violations of the Animal Welfare Act, but so far there is no concrete draft law. Animal rights activists criticize the frequent impunity and report structural problems in the animal protection system.

Act instead of looking away

How important it is to act quickly can also be seen in the recommendation of Animal Welfare Association Don't just turn a blind eye when you see animal cruelty. If direct intervention is not possible, they advise documenting the incidents and forwarding the evidence to the relevant authorities. The more precise the information, the more effective intervention can be, which also applies to the current case in Dresden.

The wild bird sanctuary itself has its hands full at the moment. Many hungry baby birds, including house sparrows and great tits, urgently need support. Therefore, a temporary ban on taking in birds was imposed - a measure that shows how serious animal care is.

These terrible incidents and the resulting discussions about animal protection in Germany are a tragedy. It remains to be hoped that such cruelty will decrease in the future and that the penalties for animal cruelty will finally be imposed on the perpetrator.
