Neustadt should become more lively: the city district council discusses wishes!

Yesterday, June 23, 2025, city district office manager André Barth opened an important meeting of the Neustadt city district advisory board at 5:30 p.m. The focus of the meeting was on the wishes and concerns of the young residents, which were presented by Michaela Gloger from the children's and youth office and Sascha König, street worker. A number of topics were on the minds of the participants, and the mood was characterized by a clear desire for more participation and better leisure opportunities.

A pin board on Alaunplatz clearly shows what children and young people want. In addition to public barbecue areas and a water playground, the younger people also want relaxation areas, zebra crossings for the Bischofsweg and a generally more lively design of the square with more color. The ideas revolve around more concerts, public toilets and open spaces that should benefit young people. A particularly frequently mentioned wish is a drinking fountain on the west side of Alaunplatz. Under the motto “no cops” there was a discussion about what less police presence means for the young people, as Sascha König explained.

Important developments in the district

This citizen participation reflects a growing interest in participation, which is often only inadequately implemented in many municipalities, as the “Omnibus for Direct Democracy” initiative makes clear. The importance of children and young people's participation is also being increasingly recognized, especially since the Corona pandemic. Formats such as youth forums and participatory building projects are very popular, as is the goal of the children's and youth office “Bau Dein Ding”, where young people are supposed to create artistic elements to redesign Louisenstrasse. The funding provided for this amounting to 2,106 euros was unanimously approved by the council.

City district office manager Barth emphasized that recurring concerns such as traffic calming and cultural offerings are actively addressed. Concrete steps are already being planned. Traffic calming on Louisenstrasse is being considered and a new sports offering is being noticed in the western extension, which has met with a positive response. The councils are also taking up the development of the Caspar David Friedrich Trail and the Dresden Romantic Trail. These projects, initiated by the Dresdner Romantik e.V., are intended to make Dresden Romanticism more visible. In this context, QR codes are also integrated on information signs to guarantee an interactive experience.

Funding and events

The “Out of the Series” project, which was launched by Gero Dumrath, was also presented at the meeting. The aim is to strengthen Hanse 3 as an event location despite the threat of termination by the owner. The majority of council members voted for the funding of 5,000 euros. This initiative shows that district life can also be enriched through cultural diversity.

In summary, the current discussions and projects in the Neustadt district advisory council show a close interaction between citizen participation, cultural exchange and concrete improvements for the quality of life of residents. The meetings of the city district advisory board, which usually take place publicly once a month, are essential for the dialogue between the population and the administration. Information on the agenda can be found in the official gazette and in display cases, as the city of Dresden describes.

The proactive approach and commitment of citizens and the city administration give hope for a positive development of the district. Young voices in particular are now being heard more, which could have a lasting impact on the future of the Neustadt.
