More financial education required: Caritas starts action week in Dresden!

The debt advice campaign week is currently taking place from June 2nd to 6th, 2025 under the motto “Best investment – financial education: when minus becomes plus”. This initiative was launched by the Debt Advice Association of Associations (AG SBV) and aims to underline the urgent need for financial education in today's society. In Dresden in particular, the Caritas Association for Dresden e.V. is calling for more space for financial education in schools, because according to a trend study, 20% of 14 to 29 year olds in Germany are already in debt, compared to 16% in 2023 and 19% in 2024. Easily accessible financing models and installment payments via app are the main reasons here.

Kerstin Knöppel, a committed debt counselor, emphasizes how important it is that financial education is integrated into school lessons. The aim of this education is to give young people a sense of personal responsibility and to help them participate in social life in a self-determined manner. The Caritas initiative is already successfully cooperating with schools in Dresden and offers various events that are specifically aimed at raising awareness of risks and strengthening financial skills.

A look at the challenges

The need for financial education is even more important when considering the causes of youth debt. Young people are often accused of “mishandling money”. Insufficient knowledge of finances, poor planning skills and uncontrolled fulfillment of consumer desires are some of the key problems that can lead to debt. A report by the Institute for Financial Services cites a lack of financial literacy and inefficient household management as further reasons for the rising debts.

Caritas is therefore calling for increased political commitment. There is a demand that financial education be integrated into all types of schools and promoted more strongly. This also includes financial support for debt counseling centers, which play an essential role as important players in the area of financial education.

Offer of events for the population

As part of the action week, Caritas is also offering a special program item: On June 4th, 2025 at 4 p.m. an information event on the topic of saving electricity will take place in the Caritas advisory services (Canalettostraße 10, 01307 Dresden). This event is free and no registration is required. Interested parties are welcome to contact debtor and insolvency advice on 0351-4984 715 or by email at Schuldnerberatung@caritas-dresden.de. The open office hours are Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The topics surrounding financial education are important not just for young people, but for all of us. It is a common goal to promote competent and responsible handling of money and thus counteract the threat of over-indebtedness. The challenge is great, but with more education, support and a consistent focus on financial education, we can work together towards a future where minus becomes plus.
