Forest remains standing: Dresden builds water pipeline for chip industry!
A lot is currently happening in the western heath of Dresden: for a whole year, the idyllic landscape is being transformed into a construction site. SachsenEnergie has given the starting signal for the construction of one1.4 kilometer long water pipegiven a central role in the care of thechip industryshould play in the north. This measure is particularly important because the water requirements of semiconductor producers, which include big names such as Infineon, TSMC and Bosch, are expected to increase by up to 100,000 euros over the next 20 years50 percentclimb.
But let’s take a moment to consider what that means specifically. The new Heide pipeline is fed from the elevated tank on Fischhausstrasse and runs through the forest to Silicon Saxony, near Königsbrücker Strasse. During the construction work, however, several hundred trees will be felled, including majestic oaks and pines, some of which are over100 years oldare.
Sustainability in focus
Sustainable water supply is a central issue, especially in view of the challenges of current and future water availability. Umweltbundesamt points out that integrated management of all water resources is essential. This includes the careful use of water in households as well as reuse in industry and agriculture. The model of sustainable development was already established in 1992 and is a pioneering approach that is also gaining in importance here in Dresden.
The construction of the water pipe should be designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible. The pipeline is mainly laid along existing paths in order to minimize interference with the landscape protection area. Compensatory measures such as the creation of orchards in Langebrück and the renaturation of the Silbersee are further steps planned as part of this project.
The path to industrial supply
The first section of the line, which spans one kilometer from the elevated container to Diebsteig, was successfully completed last year. It will begin next weeksecond sectionwith another 1.4 kilometers. One of the biggest construction challenges will be crossing the Prießnitzgrund, where the pipes have to be routed through a steep slope. During the construction work there will be temporary restrictions on the paths in the heath, which residents and those seeking relaxation will have to accept.
The regional planning is entirely in the spirit of a sustainable water supply: SachsenEnergie is committed to ensuring that water resources are used efficiently and are also secured for future generations. The burdens and conflicts of use must always be kept in mind. This is the only way to ensure economic, social and environmentally friendly development.
Conclusion: A lot is happening in Dresden to manage water reserves sensibly and to meet the growing needs of industry. We can't wait to see how the project develops in the coming months.
