Huge fire in Dresden's empty state operetta! Millions in damage!
On Friday evening, June 8, 2025, a devastating fire broke out in the former state operetta in Dresden-Leuben. The flames turned the once magnificent building into a smoking field of rubble. The fire department was on duty for a total of 18 hours to fight the fire. Despite their best efforts, the team was unable to prevent the building from burning out completely. According to initial police estimates, the damage caused amounts to a six to seven-figure amount. The exact extent of the destruction is currently being determined by fire investigators, whose investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
The state operetta, which has not been used since the end of 2016 when the ensemble moved to the Mitte power plant, was previously often the target of vandalism. This long period of vacancy apparently also contributed to the building now succumbing to one of the worst fates - complete burning out.
City in focus
The focus is now also on the city of Dresden, which is the owner of the former state operetta. Given the precarious situation in a building complex that has been unused for so long, the question arises as to what measures could be taken to avoid such a situation in the future. After all, years of inactivity had left the site a frequent target of vandalism and seemed to be a perfect example of what happens when a careful eye is not kept on such historic buildings.
Despite the tragedy of this fire, it is generating new interest in the fate of the former state operetta. Perhaps this is an opportunity to show not only the serious consequences of arson, but also the importance of monument protection and the preservation of historical buildings. Because each of these buildings tells a story - and the State Operetta was no exception.
