Athletics highlights: Dresden in focus at the German Championships!

An impressive spectacle took place last weekend in the Heinz Steyer Stadium in Dresden. The “Golden Oval” not only attracted around 8,000 spectators, but also offered top athletes a stage to demonstrate their skills. The stadium, which has now been completely renovated, has established itself as a retreat for international athletics and is a real magnet for sports enthusiasts. “The atmosphere here was simply fantastic,” remarked the Olympic shot put champion Yemisi Ogunleye (MTG Mannheim) after her competition, in which she took second place with 19.67 meters.

Rebekka Haase from the Wetzlar sprint team was also in top form: She secured second place in the sprint in 11.27 seconds and raved about the opportunity to explore the city during the event. Local hero Karl Bebendorf in particular impressively established the connection to his hometown with his new best time of 3:35.51 minutes over 1500 meters. This competition was an emotional highlight for him.

Preparation for the German Championship

The applause of the spectators is still ringing in the ears, because the anticipation of the German championship, which will take place in the same stadium from July 31st to August 3rd, 2025, is already palpable. Dresden will then host a major athletics event, which is part of the multi-sport event “The Finals” 2025. Athletics.de reports that both individual disciplines and all-around competitions will be on the program.

The championships are not only an important building block on the way to the World Championships in Tokyo in September 2025, but also attract well-known athletes. Olympic champion Yemisi Ogunleye, long jumper Malaika Mihambo, sprinter Gina Brückenkemper and German record holder Owen Ansah have already announced their arrival.

Athletics between tradition and top performance

Athletics is a sport with a long tradition and includes disciplines such as running, jumping, throwing and walking. Already at the ancient Olympic Games, which went back to 776 BC. Dating back to the 1st century BC, competitions such as shot put and long jump were on the program. Olympics.com emphasizes that athletics has also occupied an indispensable place in the modern Olympic Games since 1896. Today the sport includes individual and combined competitions that inspire athletes around the world.

The upcoming German Championships in Dresden promise to continue this special spirit of athletics and bring together numerous top-class athletes from the scene in one of the most beautiful settings in Germany.
