The highlight of the Taschenbergpalais: Luxurious reopening after renovation!

The Grandhotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski rises in the heart of the historic old town of Dresden, directly between the majestic Zwinger and the Residenzschloss. With an illustrious list of celebrity guests including names such as Barack Obama, Elton John and Vladimir Putin, the hotel has achieved a remarkable reputation since opening in 1995. In order to meet modern standards, the hotel was temporarily closed in January 2023 and underwent a major renovation. This necessity arose after 28 years of hotel operation in order to meet today's demands, as the ARD Mediathek states.

As part of the renovation, architects and designers worked to combine modern design with the charismatic historic preservation. All electrical and water pipes were replaced, which was not only complex but also expensive. Some of the hotel's 140 employees were accommodated in other Kempinski properties, while some remained in Dresden. Long-standing employees such as Thomas Wenzel, responsible for housekeeping, and Kerstin Meier, the housekeeper, are an integral part of the hotel team.

Ceremonial reopening

On February 15, 2024, the Taschenbergpalais celebrated its ceremonial reopening. Now guests can stay in 180 rooms and 31 suites and are welcomed by a modern and elegant ambience. The lobby has also been revised and is now based on the course of the Elbe. In terms of cuisine, the hotel has a lot to offer with the “Amalie” pâtisserie & lounge as well as the “Das Palais” restaurant and the “Kastenemeiers” fish restaurant. For cocktail lovers, the “1705” bar has an inspiring menu based on the “Rolling Twenties”.

A highlight of the house is the Royal Suite, one of the largest hotel suites in Germany. This offers pure luxury on 380 square meters by combining the king and queen suite. Markus Hilzinger, who is responsible for the interior design, harmoniously combined history and modern elegance in the design. In addition, the spa area on the top floor is equipped with baroque accents and offers an oasis for relaxation.

A long hotel history

The history of the Taschenbergpalais goes back to 1705, when Elector August the Strong commissioned the building for Countess Cosel. After it was almost completely destroyed in an air raid in 1945, the building remained in ruins for almost five decades. The reconstruction, which began in 1993, is a symbol of Dresden's rebirth after the Second World War. The hotel finally opened its doors on March 31, 1995, a milestone for the city and for Kempinski, the oldest luxury hotel group in Europe, founded in 1897 and today operating 82 five-star hotels in 35 countries.

Since the history of the Taschenbergpalais is particularly important, its 30th anniversary will be celebrated on March 31, 2025. These celebrations not only represent a look back at three decades of hospitality, but also an outlook on the future development of the hotel. At a time when expectations of luxury and service are rising, the Taschenbergpalais will continue to play an important role in the heart of Dresden, as will Lust auf Dresden and Kempinski report.
