Background on the circular economy
At a time when global raw material production is three times higher than it was five decades ago and demand for raw materials could rise to up to 190 billion tons by 2060, a rethink is necessary. Loud Federal Environment Agency Competition for natural resources has become more intense and around 50% of greenhouse gas emissions come from the raw materials industry. The negative impact on our environment is increasing, and only just under 9% of raw material requirements are currently covered by secondary raw materials.
The new circular economy, which is also anchored in the European Green Deal, aims for a climate-neutral and resource-saving economy. Innovative approaches to resource-saving product design, recycling and reuse are of central importance. Research institutes work intensively on optimizing the use of resources and developing sustainable products.
