Detours and traffic jams: Kesselsdorfer Straße closed from Saturday!
Things will be a little quieter on Kesselsdorfer Straße in Dresden next weekend, as the Dresden Transport Authority (DVB) has announced extensive track work. These begin on Saturday, October 16, 2025 at 12 p.m. and are expected to be completed by 6 a.m. Monday. The reason for the diversions is repair work on a switch in the track network, immediately before the junction with Rudolf-Renner-Straße. A major project that is getting old: the switch construction dates back to 1991 and is now heavily worn out, DVB reports. Day24 and DNN.
Tram lines 6, 7 and 12 will be rerouted during the work. The following applies to lines 6 and 7: They run to the “Bünaustraße” stop and continue from there via Rudolf-Renner-Straße, Conertplatz and Hebbelplatz. A replacement stop will be set up at the Wölfnitz terminus for line 12, where you can only get on. The diversions are necessary to keep traffic flowing and avoid traffic jams. Drivers also have to be prepared for restrictions, as Kesselsdorfer Straße will be completely closed from the junction with Rudolf-Renner-Straße. The diversion for cars takes place via Rudolf-Renner-Straße, Pennricher Straße and Lübecker Straße.
Construction measures in detail
The track work is an extensive project that also includes the removal of 40 meters of track surface and the replacement of the switch tongues as well as the renewal of electrical systems and control devices. In addition, the roadway will receive a new layer of mastic asphalt to improve usage. The total cost of the repair is around 90,000 euros and will be covered by the DVB maintenance budget. DNN has compiled the details of the impact on scheduled services.
But that's not the only construction project the city is planning for the coming weeks. From Monday, October 18, 2025, significant restrictions are also expected on Gellertstrasse in the city center. Here the curved track from Wiener Straße to Gellertstraße is being renewed. This work is scheduled to last until March 3, 2026 and affects lines 8, 9, 10 and 11. The diversions will be adequately signposted so that passengers can continue to find their way. Comprehensive coordination between the various modes of transport is necessary here in order not to place an excessive burden on commuters and the public. MDR provides helpful information about this planned work.
Overall, Dresden residents can look forward to improved transport connections and safer driving, even if these short-term diversions and construction sites may now require some patience and adjustments. In the end, the commitment to infrastructure definitely pays off.
