Bloody dispute in Dresden-Löbtau: man injured with knife!

An incident occurred in Dresden-Löbtau on Monday that not only alarmed residents but also the police. A 45-year-old man was injured in the leg with a knife during an argument with an unknown couple on Agnes-Smedley-Straße. The incident occurred in the afternoon and the suspects then fled towards Tharandter Straße, while the victim had to be taken to hospital to be treated. Despite an intensive search, the police were initially unsuccessful in finding the attackers. The investigation is now underway for dangerous bodily harm, although the exact reason for the dispute still needs to be clarified, as Nachrichten Aktuell reports.

What exactly happened there? The altercation that led to this knife attack gives rise to speculation. The police have not yet released any information about the background to the dispute and are now hoping for information from the public. Witnesses to the incident in particular could be crucial in shedding light on the matter.

Fatal knife attack at the weekend

Just a few days earlier, on Saturday morning, a 40-year-old man was seriously injured in a knife attack on a tram on line 7 in Dresden-Löbtau and later died from his injuries in hospital. The suspected perpetrator, a 32-year-old man who is also of Somali origin, was arrested directly at the scene. An arrest warrant was issued for him on Sunday and he is now in custody. The exact circumstances that led to this fatal altercation are still unclear, especially since both men had no previous criminal record. This raises questions about the social background and the dynamics between those involved, as Sächsische reports.

The police were informed of the incident at around 10:20 a.m. and had the tram cordoned off to secure evidence. Further information is to be collected via video surveillance and witness statements, while a crisis intervention team (KIT) is on site to look after witnesses.

Crime statistics and knife attacks

These incidents are part of a worrying development that is emerging according to the Police Crime Statistics (PKS) 2024. While the total number of registered crimes in Germany fell slightly by 1.7%, violent crime rose by 1.5%, reaching its highest level since 2007. The increase in knife attacks is particularly alarming: 29,014 such incidents were registered in 2024, which corresponds to 54.3% of all violent crimes. The number of non-German suspects rose to 913,196, which corresponds to 41.8% of all suspects. This development is also noticeable in Dresden and raises questions about the causes and possibilities for prevention, reports the BKA.

At a time when violence and knife attacks are increasing, especially in urban areas, it is important that the community comes together and seeks to raise awareness against such events. The Dresden police appeal to the public to give any relevant information to the Dresden Police Department on 0351 483 22 33.
