Child dies after bicycle accident: driver takes off!

In a tragic twist of fate, a child was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in Crystal Lake on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred at the intersection of Terra Cotta Road and Deering Oaks Lane when emergency dispatch was alerted at 9:34 p.m. A caller reported that a juvenile was struck by a vehicle that then fled the scene. Although immediate life-saving measures were performed at the scene, the child was later pronounced dead after being transported to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry. The victim's mother confirmed that it was her eldest son.

The crash investigation was handled by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Unit. Officers conducted an accident reconstruction and photographed the scene, which also included two bicycles lying in a ditch on Terra Cotta Road. The road was closed between East Hillside Road and Old Westbury Road for several hours and did not reopen until around 2:20 a.m. Evidence suggests that the suspicious vehicle may have been a Jeep Wrangler, but the search for the driver and vehicle was still unsuccessful as of Thursday morning.

Background and causes of accidents

Such accidents are particularly tragic because children are often very vulnerable in traffic. According to an analysis of the causes of accidents in children, the main cause of accidents is a traffic-unfriendly environment. The risk of being involved in an accident while cycling is particularly high for children under 15 years of age. Mistakes when merging into moving traffic and disregarding traffic rules are among the most common causes of bicycle accidents involving children. Shockingly, in 2020, over 56.8% of children between the ages of 10 and 14 who were involved in accidents were riding their bikes. Furthermore, boys in this age group are disproportionately affected.

The time after school, especially between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., is considered critical for children cycling. While the number of accidents drops significantly in the winter months, summer is traditionally the season with the most accidents, which may be due to changes in mobility behavior. Experts therefore recommend extra caution when children drive near busy roads or intersections.

After the incident was publicized on social media and local news reports, the Crystal Lake community sent its thoughts and prayers for the affected family. The McHenry County Sheriff's Office is also responding to the new road tragedy and may provide additional information in the coming days. It remains to be seen whether new clues will lead to the identity of the driver and the vehicle.
