Dresden fleeces drivers: record fines!
A lot is currently happening on the streets in Dresden: the number of 30 km/h zones is increasing, and with it the income from fines. A trend that is loud Day24 is apparently not just a reaction to traffic accidents. If you look at the current figures, you can see that the number of people injured in traffic accidents has remained constant over the years.
With the introduction of more 30 km/h zones in the last ten years - a total of 377 new zones have been set up - the city administration sees a clear step towards traffic safety. The transport mayor, Stephan Kühn from the Greens, emphasizes that these measures are also intended as part of noise protection. Critics who have the feeling that traffic is being slowed down are reminded that the aim is not just to reduce speed, but above all to ensure safety.
Statistical insights and fine revenue
A look at the figures shows that income from warnings and fines increased from 8.5 million euros in 2015 to over 13.7 million euros in 2024. This shows the increase in controls, because the use of mobile speed cameras has also grown - from 1,900 in 2015 to 2,200 in 2022. In addition, two super speed cameras have been in use since April 2024, which not only control traffic, but, according to Kühn, also serve to make the streets safer. This is also reflected in the slightly increased travel speed of cars, which was almost 25 km/h in 2023.
A comprehensive analysis of the traffic situation is provided, among other things, in the annual statistical handbook “Traffic in Numbers”, which is published by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport. This handbook, which has been reliably collecting data on traffic and accidents for over 40 years, is now also available free of charge in digital form, like this Federal Motor Transport Authority reported.
Accident statistics and road safety
The current traffic accident statistics show that there were a total of 2299 traffic accident victims in 2024, including 7 deaths. For comparison: In 2016 there were 2,214 victims with 11 deaths. These figures are not only important for the city of Dresden, they also serve as a basis for transport policy at the federal level, such as Destatis statistics shows. The aim is to take measures to improve road safety by collecting comprehensive data about accidents, people involved and vehicle types.
So it remains to be seen how developments in Dresden will develop. One thing is clear, however: the combination of increased speed limits, increased enforcement and a constant number of traffic accidents is an issue that will continue to concern the city.
