Waiting for Dresden: Nighttime closures of the Blue Wonder postponed!
There is news from the Blue Wonder in Dresden, which brings with it some changes for road users. During work on the Loschwitz Bridge's supporting structure, unexpected developments were discovered that affected the originally planned nighttime closures. Instead of this and next week as announced, the night-time closures will now be postponed to the period from November 10th to 22nd Sächsische.de reported.
The aim of this repair work is to keep the bridge in safe operation for another 30 years under the current traffic load. The first preparatory work, which began on May 12, 2025, created the basis for some of the necessary renovation work. From 2026, the repair of the Blasewitz side of the bridge will take place parallel to the current work in order to keep traffic restrictions as low as possible. Parts of the supporting structure must first be replaced before the scaffolding necessary for the work can be erected over the roadway.
What exactly happens?
After the scaffolding has been erected, traffic should be directed to the center of the structure, so that vehicles and bicycles share the respective directional lane. This traffic regulation ensures that the bridge remains open to motorized traffic, while cyclists and public transport can also use the bridge. Pedestrians have the option of using the footpath on the side downstream of the Elbe.
Protection for passers-by is guaranteed by appropriate protective devices. The city has already made funds available from the current double budget to finance the repair work, and the construction contract was awarded to Leonhard Weiss GmbH & Co. KG, with an award amount of around 17.5 million euros. Up to 50 percent of the construction costs are also funded by the Free State of Saxony.
Recognize the need for modernization
These measures are part of a larger bridge modernization program that has become essential for many older bridges in Germany. Bridges built between 1960 and 1985 in particular require extensive maintenance and modernization work. There are around 40,300 bridges in Germany as a whole, many of which are urgently awaiting initiatives to improve their load-bearing capacity and traffic safety BMV.de is to be read.
Creating and protecting the Blue Wonder is not only a local political concern, but also a building block for improving the transport infrastructure in Germany. The tasks are clear: The renovation should be carried out in seven individual phases, with two phases being processed in parallel. However, this also requires sophisticated planning to restrict traffic as little as possible.
The traffic situation at the Blauer Wunder has also changed in recent years, as the volume of traffic has fallen by 33 percent since 2009. Currently only around 23,000 vehicles pass the bridge every day. But while we provide information about these necessary construction measures, we can only hope that the repairs will soon be successfully completed, so that the Blue Wonder will continue to be an integral part of Dresden's transport infrastructure for many decades to come.
