What happens to the former C&A building in Dresden?

Prager Straße 10, 01069 Dresden, Deutschland - The move of C&A in downtown Dresden brings a breath of fresh air to Seestrasse. As Sächsische, the company has its branch from Seestrasse 7 to Prager Strasse 10 relocated. The new location offers a sales area of around 3,200 square meters, which is 1,600 square meters less than the old branch. In order to master the change and the associated challenges, C&A has reduced the prices in the collections by 30 percent.

Currently, the tiles in the old C&A building have already been removed, which signals the upcoming conversion. This building from the 1990s is redesigned by two Berlin families. Architect Sergei Tchoban has taken over the conversion and plans to set up sales areas again on the ground floor. A two -storey customer center of a health insurance company will also be built on the side street "An der Wall".

new look for downtown

The upper floors of the old C&A building are intended for offices or possibly for hotel uses, but the latter variant is likely to be attributed to a small probability. The living usage remains in the roof area. Tchoban's design provides for a consistently closed facade with high windows that are divided vertically by corrugated stone details. These new elements could give the area a fresh face and help to liven up the cityscape. Commission chairman Wolfgang Lorch praised the renovation as a "stroke of luck for the city".

City Councilor Stefan Engel from the SPD already expressed his concerns about the ground floor zones and called for changes that could contribute to the revival of the environment. Matthias Lerm, the city planning manager, referred to considerations to green the streets, which could also increase the attractiveness of the city center.

challenges for retail

The retail trade, however, sees itself how the BBSR determines, confronted with the covid-19-pandemie and other crises. These factors put a strain on the economy in the city centers and question the future viability of the shops based there. The study shows that there are increasingly vacancies that need to be avoided. This means that cities have to be creative to use retail and office space and thus secure the quality of life.

The combination of moving, conversion and the challenges of trade is a sensitive topic for the city of Dresden. With foresight and a good hand for innovative concepts, however, urban areas could preserve new shine.
