Four adventurers from Prague conquer Saxony without money!

Adventure lust pure experience currently four courageous young people from the Czech Republic who have embarked on an exciting journey through Saxony. František, Pascal, Leonid (all 17 years old) and 16-year-old Andrey are students of the German School in Prague and decided on a four-day expedition. There is only one modest provisions available to you: mini salamis, bread, pasta and flat pounds - more than this should not buy the prospective adventurers, only drinking water is allowed.

But that's not all. You have to cover at least 50 kilometers on your bicycles every day, while you also organize your accommodations independently. "This is a real challenge," says Eliska, one of the accompanying teachers, "but that not only brings you adventure, but also strengthens team spirit and self -confidence." This expedition is part of the Duke Awards, an international project that offers young people aged 14 to 24 the opportunity to improve their skills in various areas such as volunteering, sport and personal development. The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, the late husband of Queen Elisabeth II, was launched and enjoyed over eight million participants from more than 140 countries.

The expedition under the rules of the Duke Awards

A decisive feature of the Duke Awards is the promotion of the participant's discovery. The young people chose the beautiful Elbe valley area for their expedition. Her adventure began with a train ride from Prague to Děčín, followed by a bike tour to Pirna and Dresden. The next stop will be the water sports center in Radebeul before the way back leads to the picturesque Saxon Switzerland. "Nature here is breathtaking," enthuses Leonid. "We document our experiences with photos and videos." The description of your experiences is then presented at a lecture at the school, which means that you not only share your experiences, but also develop your presentation skills.

The project lasts a year and a half, and the students have to demonstrate their commitment and motivation during this phase. With the aim of obtaining the Gold Award-the highest award that can be achieved with the Duke Award-the requirements are high. Depending on the stage, the participants must meet different requirements. For the gold level, in which the Dresden students take part, adventures and three nights in nature are required for at least four days. They rely on working in the team and trusting each other.

Personal development and team spirit promote

Due to the planning and challenges of the expedition, the participants not only develop their physical skills, but also social skills. This trip promotes self -confidence, resilience and problem -solving skills and is an important step in the development of young people. The aim is not only to discover nature, but also to make a change in your attitudes and your actions.

The German School in Prague has been participating in this valuable project since 2013 and enables its students to gain experience that they will accompany them for a lifetime. "We not only want to promote the young people academically, but also give them life skills," emphasizes Svetlana, another supervising teacher. In this way, the participants of the Duke Awards can proudly present their successful services to employers or universities, which will open a lot of doors to them.
