Dismantling of Seestrasse: Pedestrian zone will remain until October!

From October 20, 2025, Seestrasse in Dresden's old town will once again be an adventure for pedestrians and cyclists. After the section between Altmarkt and Dr.-Külz-Ring was put through its paces last year, it is now officially being converted back into a promenade. According to MeiDresden, around 500,000 people stream across the green areas every month.

In order to further improve the quality of stay, dismantling work has been announced from Monday and will last until Friday, October 27th. Cars will then be allowed to use Seestrasse again. However, the street furniture, consisting of raised beds with winter-hardy plants and seating, will remain in place until next spring. The colored chairs and platforms at the southern entrance will be dismantled and stored for the winter months. A refreshment of the greenery is planned for spring 2026, during which some wooden elements will also be repainted.

Why the project is important

The “Living Lake Street” project is intended to increase the attractiveness and climate friendliness of the area for pedestrians, cyclists and retailers. The Old Town District Advisory Board has made 55,000 euros available to further green Seestrasse and equip it with new seating elements. André Barth, head of the Old Town district office, emphasizes that the revitalization of the city center not only benefits pedestrians, but also retail and restaurants. The positive response from a survey, in which 86% of pedestrians surveyed voted for a permanent pedestrian zone, strengthened the decision to make the project permanent.

The survey was about the previous traffic trial, which caused a stir last summer because of its high cost of 334,000 euros. If you think about the comfort and quality of life that this initiative promises, it is clear: this is not just about numbers, but about living spaces. A real win for Dresden's city center.

Looking into the future

From Monday, October 27, 2025, after the dismantling work has been completed, Seestrasse will be reopened to motorized traffic. But that won't last long, as emerging plans for tree planting and permanent seating will further advance the green oasis. The barrier-free design of the street is also on the agenda to provide better access for all citizens and visitors.

The work on the promenade could help to improve the atmosphere in the city and is being financed with the support of the federal funding program “Sustainable Inner Cities and Centers (ZIZ)”. Rainer Pietrusky, coordinator of the “Chances for those without opportunities” initiative, worked intensively on implementation. “We have the opportunity here to redesign urban space and make it usable for everyone,” says Pietrusky with certainty.

In the summer of 2024, Seestrasse had already completed its first test run as a pedestrian zone. Now everything is looking forward to another exciting chapter for this central location in the old town.
