New cycle route in Johannstadt: connection for safe routes until July!

Construction work on the new connection between Comeniusstraße and Stübelallee began on June 2, 2025. This means that the Dresden East cycle route will be further expanded and significantly improved, as the new footpath and cycle path will be built parallel to the tram tracks. This measure is a significant step towards modal shift and promotes environmentally friendly mobility in Dresden. The work should be completed by mid-July 2025, as johannstadt.de reports.

The new path is three meters wide and offers cyclists the opportunity to get out of town via Güntzstrasse to Comeniusstrasse. However, there may be restrictions on walking, cycling and motorized traffic during the construction period. In order to control this as best as possible, diversions are available. Pedestrians can use Comeniusstraße and the passage at SP1 to Straßburger Platz, while cyclists must follow the signposted cycle diversion via Wintergartenstraße.

Financial support and further planning

The construction work costs around 160,000 euros, with the federal government funding around 85 percent of the costs through the special “City and Country” program. This program aims to improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists in Dresden. Significant funding is earmarked for pedestrian and cycle paths in the next few years, including 300,000 euros for 2023, 600,000 euros for 2024 and 900,000 euros annually from 2025 to 2027, as dawo-dresden.de describes.

In addition, various measures are being planned to further increase the city's pedestrian-friendliness. A pedestrian strategy adopted by the city council in 2022 allows for the construction of new walking options and the repair of existing paths. The 37 planned construction projects include accessibility measures and the installation of guidance systems for the blind.

Sustainable urban development and planned measures

A further step in the right direction will be taken with the planned redesign of the adjacent public green space from mid-August 2025, for which around 400,000 euros are estimated. This measure is part of the “Sport and Play” funding program, which is dedicated to promoting sports activities and improving the quality of life in public spaces, as explained in detail on dresden.de.

In addition, the East cycle route will be connected directly to Straßburger Platz and continued via Comeniusstrasse. Other planned measures include the expansion of the cycle paths on Bautzner Straße, new cycle lane markings and Bike+Ride facilities at 70 stops with over 1,500 new cycle parking spaces. These developments are intended to help make cycling in the city safer and more comfortable and also to better organize winter maintenance on cycle paths.

The Dresden city administration is determined to significantly promote and expand cycling and walking in the Elbe city. This will not only increase the quality of life, but also put sustainable mobility in the city further on track.
