New cycling route in Johannstadt: Connection for safe ways until July!

Pirnaische Vorstadt, Deutschland - On June 2, 2025, the construction work for the new connection between Comeniusstraße and Stübelallee started. This further expanded the Radroute Dresden Ost and significantly improved, because the new foot and bike path is created in parallel to the track system of the tram. This measure is an important step towards relocating traffic and promotes environmentally friendly mobility in Dresden. The work should be completed by mid-July 2025, as Johannstadt.de reports.

The new path has a width of three meters and offers cyclists the opportunity to reach Comeniusstraße across Güntzstraße. During the construction period, however, there may be restrictions in foot, bike and motorized traffic. In order to control them as well as possible, detours are available. Pedestrians can use the Comeniusstraße and the passage on the SP1 to Strasburger Platz, while cyclists have to follow the signposted cycling through Wintergartenstrasse.

Financial support and further planning

The construction work costs around 160,000 euros, with the federal government promoting around 85 percent of the costs through the special program "City and Land". This program aims to improve the conditions for pedestrians and cyclists in Dresden. Over the next few years, there are considerable funds for foot and cycle paths, including 300,000 euros for 2023, 600,000 euros annually from 2025 to 2027, as described [dawo-dresden.de] (https://dawo-dresden.de/2023/02/- Viel-geld-fliesst-in-fuss-und-undradwege/).

In addition, various measures are planned to further increase the city's pedestrian friendliness. A foot traffic strategy that the city council has adopted 2022 enables the construction of new walking opportunities and the repair of existing paths. Among the 37 planned construction projects can be found in accessibility measures and the installation of blind control systems.

sustainable urban development and planned measures

Another step in the right direction is taken with the planned redesign of the adjacent public green area from mid -August 2025, for which around 400,000 euros are estimated. This measure is part of the "Sport und Game" funding program, which has been committed to promoting sports activities and the improvement of the quality of life in public spaces, as explained in detail on Dresden.de.

In addition, the East Radroute is connected directly to Strasburger Platz and continued via Comeniusstraße. Other planned measures include the expansion of the cycle paths on Bautzner Straße, new wheel strip markings and bike+Ride systems at 70 stops with over 1500 new bike parking spaces. These developments should help to ensure that cycling in the city becomes more secure and more comfortable and the winter service on bike paths is also better organized.

The Dresden city administration is therefore determined to promote and expand the wheel and foot traffic in the Elbe city. This will not only increase the quality of life, but will also get sustainable mobility in the city on course.
