Premiere of The Medicus”: Theater Plauen-Zwickau promises a spectacle!

On Saturday, the Plauen-Zwickau Theater is celebrating an exciting premiere: The musical “Der Medicus” will be performed on the open-air stage in the Plauen Parktheater. After the great success of the medieval play “Artus – Excalibur” two years ago, the team decided to take another look at the past. The aim of the theater is to break attendance records and to take a wide audience into the historical world of the 11th century, such as the Free press reported.

Based on the bestselling novel by Noah Gordon, the musical tells the moving story of Rob Cole, an orphan who grows up at a time when medical knowledge is rare in the Western world. Thanks to his special ability to predict death before he touches him, Rob comes into the care of a healer. But his longing to study medicine and honestly help drives him on a dangerous journey to Persia, where he wants to study with the famous doctor Avicena. To achieve this, Rob pretends to be a Jew, which puts his life at great risk. In addition to dramatic conflicts, Rob also finds the love of his life and goes on a journey to himself, says the Plauen-Zwickau Theater in a detailed description of the musical on your own website.

An outstanding creative team

The musical by Iván Macías and Félix Amador relies on both classical and contemporary sounds. Iván Macías not only takes care of the music, but is also active as music director and orchestrator. José Luis Sixto and Francesc Abós are directing the film and, together with a talented creative team, are responsible for the harmonious stage design and impressive choreography. What is particularly noteworthy is that the translation by Hartmut H. Forche was awarded the Musical Award in 2025 for the best translation of the season.

Theater culture in Germany

The Plauen Park Theater is one of the many public theaters in Germany, which together attract more than 15.9 million visitors per year. The theater landscape includes 134 public theaters and some private ones, which cover a wide range of performing arts with over 56,900 events. Düsseldorf, Berlin and other large cities are very popular. Personnel costs in German theaters account for around 71.4 percent of the total expenditure of around 2.6 billion euros, with employment in the theater sector comprising over 40,600 people according to the latest data. In Saxony, public theaters receive the highest state operating subsidies per visit, at around 233 euros, which once again underlines the importance of the cultural scene in the region, as Statista reports.

The premiere of “The Medicus” will not only delight the audience, but will also make a further contribution to the lively theater scene in Saxony. A visit to the performance is an absolute must for anyone who is passionate about theater and history! Be there and experience a fascinating mix of drama, music and emotion!
