New artificial turf and renovation: Pieschen is planning big projects!
On September 3, 2025, the Pieschen district advisory board met in the central factory and discussed exciting developments in Übigau. A central topic of the meeting were the plans to redesign Mengsplatz and the construction of a new artificial turf pitch for the TSV Rotation 1990. These projects are under the umbrella of intensive project funding, which is based on the guidelines of the city districts. Dresden.de emphasizes that such projects must have a direct connection to the district and their regional impact is often crucial, not only for the sporting but also for the cultural vitality of the district.
The representative of DB InfraGO also provided information about the upcoming reactivation of the Dresden-Neustadt freight station, which raises questions about future urban development. In order to increase the attractiveness of Mengsplatz, Jana Kaden from the Office for Urban Greenery presented the results of a feasibility study: Mengsplatz is the only municipal green space in Übigau and has historical significance, designed by architect Paul Wolf in 1927. The renovation of the square's surface, the restoration of the fountain and the new planting of lime trees are parts of the restoration plan, which totals around 300,000 Euro is estimated, but there are currently no funds available in the city budget.
Sporting perspectives for the TSV rotation 1990
As far as the TSV Rotation 1990 is concerned, the existing hard pitch will be replaced by a modern artificial turf pitch in May 2026. With a total budget of 629,000 euros, the financial resources are already anchored in the budget. Such investments are particularly important in urban districts as they strengthen social structures and a sense of community. Thomas Grundmann, head of the city district office, made it clear how important such small projects are for local coexistence.
Exciting projects were also presented as part of the funding applications. The Diakonisches Werk applied for 2,229.13 euros for an open-air project with young people - an application that was approved with an overwhelming majority of 11 votes in favor and 3 abstentions. Furthermore, Nug Mui Balance e.V.'s application for floor renovation in the club rooms, which costs a total of 8,000 euros, received unanimous approval. It should be emphasized here that the club brings 1,000 euros in its own funds and 1,500 euros from its own sports facility operations. The remaining capital of 5,034 euros will be secured through the funding application.
Citizen participation in focus
In recent years, citizen participation in urban development has become more important. As described in bürgergesellschaft.de, it is important that citizens are informed about planning goals at an early stage. However, the “participation paradox” often makes it clear that many people are only involved in decision-making processes late, when their influence on the design is already limited.
Thomas Grundmann also announced the continuation of the citizens' get-togethers, and the next edition will take place on September 17th in front of the Trafo-Häuschen on Konkordienplatz. Such forums offer a valuable opportunity to actively participate in urban development processes and promote dialogue between administration and citizens.
In summary, the municipal district advisory board in Pieschen is well on the way to taking the concerns of residents seriously and launching projects that support both the sporting and social infrastructure. Whether it's football or maintaining green spaces - there's a lot going on in Übigau!
