Waldschlößchentunnel: Planned closures for important maintenance work!
It has been a long time since the tunnel systems in Dresden underwent comprehensive maintenance. Next week, the Waldschlößchen tunnel will be closed between November 3rd and 6th, 2025 in order to carry out urgently needed safety checks. The measures affect both the western tube, which leads towards the Waldschlößchenbrücke, and the eastern tube, which leads to Stauffenbergallee.
How MeiDresden reported, the west tube will be closed on November 3rd and 6th, while the east tube will not be accessible on November 4th and 5th. During this time, traffic will be routed in both directions via the approved tube. In order to ease the traffic situation, special periods have also been set for additional closures: on November 5th from 8 p.m. to around 10:15 p.m. the access from Bautzner Straße to Waldschlößchenbrücke will be closed, and on the night of November 5th to 6th from 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. there will be a closure of access from the bridge to Bautzner Straße in the direction of travel out of town.
Why the closures?
The reason for these drastic measures? A comprehensive safety check of the tunnel technology. In addition to checking the fire alarm systems and emergency call options, the inspection also includes cleaning the tunnel walls, drainage systems and lighting. In addition, damaged manhole covers in both main tubes will be replaced. This work is being carried out by the company SPIE-OSMO, while the Dresden drainage system is responsible for the repair work on the manhole covers. The total cost of the maintenance work is around 65,000 euros.
Comparable to large infrastructure projects abroad, such as the well-known Big Dig in Boston, which was implemented from 1991 to 2006 and cost a whopping USD 14.6 billion, it becomes clear that such measures can be not only costly, but also time-consuming. The challenges associated with the maintenance and construction of such tunnels cannot be underestimated. After all, research is also being carried out in this country when it comes to safety in order to prevent similar incidents such as the fatal accident in the Big Dig in 2006.
A look into the future
The maintenance work is not only crucial for the safety of users, but also for future traffic development in Dresden. The city is investing in its infrastructure to avoid chronic traffic congestion and safety issues that have experienced similar projects around the world. This commitment not only means safety, but also future-proof traffic management.
In the hope that everything goes smoothly and the measures are completed on time, we are looking forward to the developments at the Waldschlößchen tunnel. It is expected that once the work is completed, the city will once again be able to offer a safe and welcoming transport experience. Stay informed and plan your trips carefully!
