Neustadt in turmoil: right-wing extremist slogans and brutal robbery!
Late on Thursday evening, the police in the Outer Neustadt became active when an 18-year-old man loudly shouted right-wing extremist slogans on Alaunstrasse. Thanks to attentive witnesses, the police were able to quickly locate the man. He is now being investigated for using the symbols of unconstitutional organizations. Such incidents have increased alarmingly in Germany, as shown by current statistics on right-wing extremist crimes. Between 2014 and 2024, the number of politically motivated crimes with a right-wing extremist background rose by 47.4 percent, according to Statista in a publication by the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Criminal Police Office.
This worrying development is also reflected in the number of violent right-wing extremists: The Office for the Protection of the Constitution reports around 15,300 people who are actively prepared to use violence. The total pool of right-wing extremist people rose to around 50,250 in 2024, an increase of 9,650 people compared to the previous year. At a time when such extremism is present, public safety is increasingly being questioned.
Further police reports from Dresden
But it's not just the right-wing extremist mood that is causing worry lines. In the early hours of the same day, a 49-year-old man experienced a robbery on Albertplatz when two unknown people tried to snatch cigarettes from him. When he resisted, the perpetrators pulled out pepper spray and quickly left the scene with their loot - a pack of cigarettes. The police have started an investigation into the robbery.
On Friday morning there was another incident on Alumplatz that required the work of the fire department: a trash can that apparently contained a burning e-scooter burst into flames. Fortunately, no one was injured and there is no information yet about the extent of the damage. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
Traffic accidents and injuries
Another incident occurred on Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Königsbrücker Straße and Stauffenbergallee. There was a traffic accident there in which a 56-year-old driver was slightly injured when an ambulance with a special signal collided with a VW Golf. The property damage is estimated at around 20,000 euros, and the police are asking for information from witnesses in order to clarify the exact events.
In another unfortunate episode, a 49-year-old cyclist fell heavily after hitting the tram tracks on Bischofsweg. The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries. An alcohol test showed that he had more than 1.2 per mille in his blood. Now he is also being investigated for drunk driving.
The events of the last few days in Dresden show that the city continues to face various challenges. Citizens are urged to be vigilant and report suspicious activity to ensure a safe and peaceful environment for all.
The developments in the area of right-wing extremism should not only worry us, but should also inspire us to act to promote solidarity and respectful coexistence - anywhere and at any time. In addition, the wave of violence is a clear reminder that there is much that is wrong in our society and that we are all called upon to counteract it.
