Major raid in Görlitz: Authorities are hunting illegal gambling!
A comprehensive raid began today in Görlitz, mobilizing several authorities. The police, customs and the tax office, together with the public prosecutor's office, took action against the operators of a suspected illegal gambling operation. A total of nine buildings in the east of Görlitz were searched, with the main activities concentrated particularly on Hospitalstrasse, Bahnhofstrasse and Otto-Buchwitz-Platz. These drastic measures are linked to allegations of illegal gambling, tax and economic crimes. The operation began in the early morning hours of June 11, 2025, as Blick reports.
The raid comes at a time when the Görlitz Police Department is drawing an alarming conclusion for 2023. The increase in crimes speaks volumes: 46,123 offenses were recorded within the police's area of responsibility, which corresponds to an increase of 24.5 percent compared to the previous year. What is particularly striking here are the 8,805 “violations of immigration law”, which are the main cause of this increase, explains Tag24.
Crime statistics in focus
The statistics show that 33.5 percent of criminal cases in Görlitz are due to thefts and burglaries. Although the number of stolen cars has fallen, there has been a worrying increase in bicycle thefts and home break-ins. Politically motivated crimes rose from 863 to 1,105, with the majority being motivated by the right. In addition, 13,810 traffic accidents were registered in the traffic statistics, which also represents a significant challenge for the local security forces.
The local authorities, including police director Mirko Göhler, point to the high clearance rate and emphasize security in the Bautzen and Görlitz districts. Still, the challenges are undeniable and the crackdown could be an important step in tackling rising crime.
Illegal gambling in the spotlight
Today's measures could also be an indication of increasing pressure to crack down on illegal gambling, which according to Faktenhub has reached record levels. This development raises questions about the legal framework and the measures required to effectively address this problem.
The raid in Görlitz is not just a reaction to certain incidents, but could be a signal for a broader fight against crime in the region. It remains to be seen whether these measures will bring the desired success in the long term, but one thing is clear: there is something going on in the Görlitz security landscape.
