Dresden in turmoil: Carolabrücke collapses – chaos and fear for the city!

Dresden is currently experiencing some exciting changes, and there is both good and challenging news from the city.

Michelin star for the Heiderand

Meanwhile, there's a celebration going on in idyllic Dresden-Bühlau: the Heiderand restaurant has finally received its first Michelin star. Boss Martin Walther describes the award ceremony as an emotional moment. This could not only increase the recognition of its excellent cuisine, but also the gastronomic offer in the region.

New construction of the Carola Bridge: meeting this evening

A look at the most recent construction projects shows that the city is also facing major challenges. The Dresden city council is meeting this evening to debate the new construction of the Carola Bridge. The meeting will be open to the public and streamed live. This bridge recently made headlines for a tragic incident when parts of it fell into the Elbe. Luckily there were no injuries, but this shows how critical the condition of the infrastructure is. The collapse affected an approximately 100 meter long area where the tram also runs. The fire brigade was alerted at 3:08 a.m. and the entire area around the bridge is currently closed, and the Elbe cycle path is also at a standstill.

The tram network is recovering

Those affected by traffic, however, can breathe a sigh of relief: from June 30th, tram line 11 will run to Bühlau again after a 26-month construction period. This construction work affected more than 10,000 passengers a day and caused replacement traffic that cost the city 70,000 euros a week. The new construction and renovation of the bridge is urgently necessary because a gap of around one meter has formed at the bridgehead and a massive leak of hot water has been reported from two district heating pipes, which has flooded parts of the terrace bank.

Infrastructure in focus

These challenges are also faced by the ongoing renovation of other transport routes in Dresden. A total of 67.5 million euros are planned for investments and 21.5 million euros for maintaining the value of the road network in 2023. 55% of Dresden's road network is in good and very good condition, but 34% has damage that needs to be repaired promptly, while 12% is in very poor condition. These are concerns that the city government can no longer ignore.

Housing impacts the community

While many are looking to the future, the Kreutzer family from Dresden-Weißig is struggling to find a new home. After an announcement, they have to move out of their current apartment. This shows how personal fates are at the forefront during this time and how important a stable living environment is while the city tries to keep its infrastructure in good condition.

It is all the more important that major events such as the 15th Dresden Palace Night on July 19th, for which a large proportion of the tickets have already been sold, can continue to take place. However, organizers recommend turning your back on the car and planning alternative journeys.

The developments in Dresden provide many exciting moments. From culinary delights to infrastructural challenges, the city is facing exciting times. Let's stay tuned!
