Cotta sports complex: Plant trees and create space for the future!
Something is happening at the Hebbelstrasse sports facility in Dresden: company manager Gunnar Krisch, youth leader Denis Kruppa and Roberto Bäcker planted a large number of fruit trees today. A nice step towards a natural sports facility that not only thinks about new training conditions, but also fresh air and green stones. The initiative not only relates to sport, but also to local nature.
With the aim of creating an attractive environment for athletes as well as animals and plants, the large playing field of the Postsportverein Dresden e. V. renewed until the end of November. A modern, long-lasting artificial turf will be installed here, replacing the old grass carpet, which is almost 20 years old, with an environmentally friendly construction. The total costs amount to around 420,000 euros, financed by the Dresden sports facilities company, the Cotta district council and generous donations from the association. Dresden district newspapers reports that sports mayor Jan Donhauser expressly praised the commitment of everyone involved.
A project for diversity
In order to promote biodiversity in the city, a biodiversity project is being implemented on an area of 1,700 square meters, which provides wild meadows for insects and small animals. As part of this initiative, in addition to 18 new fruit trees, such as apple thorn and pear, ten native shrubs, including elderberry and cornelian cherry, will also be planted. Rock piles and dead wood will provide habitats for numerous species. Krisch emphasizes the importance of creating the best training and competition conditions while at the same time contributing to a sustainable urban climate.
The planting and care work is carried out by the company's construction yard with its own staff. The Cotta district advisory board is also involved and is providing around 5,000 euros for the trees. An innovative 1,000 liter water tank, which comes from the “Watering Can Heroes” project, ensures that the trees can be watered sustainably. The entire project is in line with the “Eco-friendly design of sports facilities” guidelines, which were developed together with the State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology. This initiative can certainly serve as a model for other municipalities and associations that would like to launch similar projects.
Outlook for the future
Further steps are already planned for the coming year: the conversion of the Tennen small playing field at Steinbacher Straße 56 a into modern artificial turf with energy-saving lighting is planned for 2026. This continues the trend towards more sustainability and biodiversity, and Dresden remains in the fast lane, both sportily and ecologically. The commitment of those responsible shows that they have a good hand when it comes to merging sport and nature.
It will be exciting to see how the Hebbelstrasse sports facility will develop and what other projects will be initiated in the city. Residents can look forward to a greener environment that will bring back some quality of life, while athletes will benefit from first-class conditions.
