Lightning strike sparks devastating roof fire in Dresden!
A restless morning for the Dresden fire department: On June 23, 2025, the emergency services were called upon twice. First, a roof fire broke out in an apartment building on Bolivar Street at 6:47 a.m. after lightning struck the building during a thunderstorm. The quick and decisive actions of the residents made it possible to alert the fire department immediately and potentially prevent anything worse from happening.
When the fire brigade arrived, flames were already coming from the roof ridge and thick smoke was visible. Thanks to an immediate extinguishing attack using a turntable ladder and a large number of emergency services, the flames were quickly contained. Crews wearing respiratory protection also checked the apartments in the attic for possible fire spread. High-performance fans were used to dispel the smoke from the fire. After the open flames had been extinguished, a smoldering fire under the roof was discovered with a thermal imaging camera, which is why additional forces had to be alerted. A total of around 40 emergency services from the Albertstadt, Übigau, Altstadt and Pieschen fire and rescue stations were on site without any injuries being reported. Bolivarstrasse remained completely closed during the extinguishing and control work and led to significant traffic restrictions in the area, as reported by nachrichten-heute.net.
Garage fire in Gorbitz
The first work on Bolivarstrasse had barely been completed when the emergency services were called to another fire on Espenstrasse in Gorbitz at 7:16 a.m. A fire broke out in a garage in the garage courtyard, which caused significant damage to a BMW while the fire was being extinguished. Here too, the cause of the fire was initially unclear. The fire department had to force its way into the garage to fight the fire with water and extinguishing foam. A firefighter was injured during the extinguishing work and was treated on site and then transported to hospital. Around 30 firefighters from various services, including the Übigau, Altstadt and Löbtau fire and rescue stations as well as the Gorbitz district fire department, were active in the operational management, as bild.de added.
A look at the fire statistics
Both missions bring the topic of fire protection into focus. Unfortunately, there are no uniform and comprehensive fire statistics in Germany, so precise data on fires, causes of fires and injuries are missing. The FeuerTrutz repeatedly emphasizes how important it is to regularly update such statistics in order to improve the safety situation and preventative measures in firefighting. This could help to be even better prepared in the future when unpleasant events like today occur.
The incidents of the day clearly show how crucial timely action is in emergencies. The rapid response of the fire brigade and the responsible behavior of the residents were able to avert more serious consequences. While the fire brigade continues to have the situation under control, the people of Dresden can only hope that such dramatic operations become less frequent in the future.
