Traffic jam nightmare at Pentecost: traffic chaos expected in central Germany!
Anyone using the roads from Dresden on the coming Pentecost weekend should be prepared to be patient. Autobahn GmbH urgently warns of traffic jam problems, especially on the important A4, A9 and A72 connections. As MDR reports, traffic jams are to be expected, especially on the A4 between Hermsdorf-Ost and Rüdersdorf, as well as in the area around Erfurt, Weimar and Jena. Traffic is also expected to be slow along the Dresden bypass.
A particularly critical bottleneck is an approximately 20 kilometer long section between Dresden's old town and the Nossen triangle, where a construction site is significantly hindering the flow. Drivers who want to drive into Upper Lusatia should be prepared for bottlenecks between Nieder Seifersdorf and Kodersdorf.
Danger of traffic jams on the highways
There are also challenges on the A9, which leads from Berlin to Halle/Leipzig. The sections between Köselitz and Vockerode and between Naumburg and Droyßig are particularly affected. This traffic jam risk was updated on June 6, 2025, according to Stau.info. There was also a serious accident involving three vehicles, which led to a complete closure between Dessau-Süd and Vockerode.
The A72 around Zwickau is also not spared: bottlenecks are reported here, especially in the areas of Treuen and Reichenbach in Vogtland. It's worth considering alternative routes, particularly during peak periods when travel is busiest on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings.
Holiday traffic and holiday times
The long Whitsun weekend, which lasts from June 3rd to 10th, 2025, brings a large number of travelers onto the streets. As Auto-Presse reports, significant traffic volumes are expected in several federal states due to the start of the holidays. Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen and Lower Saxony in particular have no school on Tuesdays after Pentecost, which further increases travel traffic.
Visitors from these regions aim to explore popular travel destinations such as the Alps or the North and Baltic Seas. The return wave is mainly expected on Whit Monday and the following Tuesday. A small ray of hope: Whitsun Sunday, June 8th, should be a little quieter.
The expected chaos on the motorways is nothing new, but it will be exacerbated by construction sites in combination with increased entry controls at the German borders. These factors cause additional time delays at certain transitions that some people may not have taken into account.
In order to avoid stress, it might be advisable to plan your travel times well so that you don't get caught in traffic on this traffic jam-plagued weekend.
