Three cyclists injured in accident on Elbe cycle path – witnesses wanted!

On Thursday morning there was an unfortunate incident on the popular Elbe cycle path in which three cyclists were slightly injured. At around 9 a.m. between the Loschwitz Bridge and the Waldschlößchen Bridge, an unknown cyclist overtook several other cyclists and hit an 11-year-old cyclist. She fell and sustained minor injuries. The 47-year-old cyclist who was riding directly behind her also fell and at the same time caused another accident with a 24-year-old cyclist who was traveling towards Waldschlößchenbrücke and also fell to the ground. This then ended with the injured people being seen on the ground.

Surprisingly, the cyclist who caused the accident simply left the scene after the incident without paying any attention to the injured. The traffic accident service has now started an investigation and is urgently looking for witnesses who may have observed the incident. The Dresden Police Department will accept information on (0351) 483 22 33. The importance of such witness information is shown not only by this particular case, but also by the current situation of cycling accidents, which are increasing more and more.

Increasing number of accidents among cyclists

In general, the number of accidents involving cyclists is increasing, and often no other road users are involved. According to a study by insurers' accident research (UDV), there were over 27,400 cycling accidents in 2023 that occurred without the influence of others. A shocking 6,400 people sustained serious injuries. Accidents increase, particularly in the winter months when the weather conditions worsen. A third of the most serious bicycle accidents are solo accidents, which shows how important a safe infrastructure is.

The UDV points out that numerous accidents are often due to deficiencies in the infrastructure. Curbs and tram tracks are often the triggers for falls. There are therefore calls for improvements in traffic conditions for cyclists in order to further reduce the risk. After all, almost two thirds of cyclists say that their own driving style often plays a role in accidents. Dealing with speed correctly and paying attention to your surroundings are of utmost importance not only for yourself, but also for other road users.

The police and traffic authorities are required to take preventive measures as well as to support affected cyclists in the event of accidents. Given the increasing number of accidents involving Pedelecs, which have more severe consequences due to their higher speed and heavier weight, this should be an incentive for everyone who enjoys traveling on two wheels to be even more careful. It remains to be hoped that thanks to the police investigation, everyone involved in the recent accident on the Elbe cycle path will soon receive the support and clarity they need.

For further information and current developments, our news magazine will stay tuned. The relief about the health of all cyclists can only be a small ray of hope in the midst of the ever-increasing accident statistics, which should motivate local authorities to take action.
