Dresden increases pedestrian safety: renovation in Leuben, Prohlis, old town!

Something is happening in Dresden – especially for pedestrians! The city administration has started repairing sidewalks in several districts to improve pedestrian conditions. The measures affect the districts of Leuben, Prohlis and the old town and are expected to run until mid-September 2025. Not only will unpaved footpath areas be upgraded, but barrier-free access will also be created to ensure better use of the paths. Initiatives such as the city council's foot traffic strategy aim to sustainably improve conditions for pedestrians since 2023.

In Leuben, the northern footpath on Sachsenwerkstrasse is currently being repaired, a section from Robert-Berndt-Strasse to Lilienthalstrasse. Here, unpaved areas are being supplemented with concrete paving and damaged curbs and street gullies are being replaced. In total, the Leuben city district administration is investing around 89,000 euros in this work, which is scheduled to be completed by August 30, 2025. SAZ GmbH from Heidenau is commissioned to carry out the work. Entire sections of the footpath and road must also be completely closed for the duration of the renovation, although access for residents is maintained.

Active in the old town and Prohlis

Things are no less active in the old town either. The section of sidewalk from the Reitbahnstraße parking lot to the IBIS Hotel will be renewed by September 12, 2025. Here Hundeck Tief- undwegebau GmbH ensures that broken curbs are replaced and the path is made barrier-free for hotel guests. This work costs around 34,000 euros, which will be covered by the state capital Dresden. Here too, access to the adjacent properties will be ensured during construction work.

Prohlis is not left out either; Here the northern sidewalk on Rembrandtstrasse will be renewed by September 15, 2025. Weishaupt Straßen- und Tiefbau GmbH is responsible for the implementation, with the planned costs being around 80,000 euros, which will be borne by the Prohlis district office. Here, too, unpaved areas are being upgraded with concrete paving and damaged high curbs and street gullies are being replaced. During the construction period, the sidewalk will be completely closed and the road will be partially closed.

An overall picture for pedestrian safety

These measures are part of a broader plan to implement the city's walking strategy. This strategy has not only found reinforcements in the road and civil engineering department, but has also placed it in a good financial position. Significant funds are available for the next few years: 300,000 euros for 2023, 600,000 euros for 2024 and up to 900,000 euros by 2027 - this will not only continuously improve maintenance, but also accessibility and pedestrian safety. FUSS e.V. has played an important role in this and advised numerous cities on the development of their pedestrian traffic strategies.

In short, Dresden shows that people are not standing still when it comes to pedestrian traffic. With targeted investments and a clear plan, the city administration and the contracted companies are working to create a safe and welcoming environment for all pedestrians - and that is great news for the city!
