Wehlener Straße in Dresden: Refurbishment is approaching - traffic remains affected!
In Dresden-Backgast, the last construction work on Wehlener Strasse is currently running, and the end of the measure is getting closer. From July 21st, work on a new section will begin, which should be completed until mid -December. This renovation is an important step, because the street is considered the central traffic axis of the district and has been in a modest condition since 2013 flood. [Saxon] reports that it was therefore high time for comprehensive renewal.
The Dresden Verkehrsbetriebe (DVB) have already informed about the upcoming changes. During the construction period, the tram lines 44 and 46 are discontinued, and replacement traffic with buses (EV4/6) between Tolkewitz and Laubegast and Niedersedlitz are set up. The dismantling work of the provisional track arches at the crossing Leubener Straße/Österreicher Straße begin on Wednesday and mark further progress in this extensive project.
extensive construction work and improvements
As early as March 2024, the actual construction work started, which included comprehensive civil engineering and track work along Wehlener Straße between Schlömilchstraße and the Leubener/Austria Strasse intersection. In order to keep the impairments for residents and traders as low as possible, work is done in small sections. This means that access to local shops remains guaranteed. The entire construction work is designed for almost two years, which can be expected in December 2025, as [DVB] explained in detail.
Another advantage of the renovation: After completion, all stops in the conversion area will be barrier -free and have been equipped with digital information ads. The track system between Alttolkewitz and Hermann-Seidel-Straße is also optimized, which contributes to significantly increasing both driving dynamics and driving comfort.
further projects in Dresden
This construction site is not the only one that will deal with the city of Dresden in the coming years. In May 2025, the renovation of the blue miracle will continue with the aim of minimizing traffic restrictions during the construction work. Another large building block will be the fundamental road and track renovation on Hamburger Straße, which is expected to be carried out from December 2025 to March 2029. These measures are part of a larger plan to improve the infrastructure in Dresden, as can be read in a [press release] of the city administration.
The city has ambitious plans for the renovation and expansion of the transport network. It remains to be seen how the traffic situation in Dresden will continue to change the coming months and years. The citizens are called up to adapt well to the changes and to use the DVB offers while construction continues to be made.
